Who started LEGO?

Who started LEGO, more information for a speech about LEGO

That is Mr. Ole Kirk Christiaensen. He is the founder of the LEGO company and the creator of the first well-known brick. Ole was born in Billund (Denmark) in 1891. He was a carpenter by profession. He mainly made wooden kitchen utensils and ironing boards. His son Godtfred often helped. At that time many things were made from wood. Plastic was not yet in widespread use. He regularly made wooden toys for his son. This is how Ole made the first building blocks at that time... that was already in 1932.

Where does the name LEGO come from?

Mr Christiaensen gives the wooden toys a name: " Lego ", a combination of the words "leg" and "godt", which means "play well". Only later does he discover that the word Lego has another meaning. In Latin it means: “I teach” or “I compile”.

So you can see that toys often have a learning function.

The switch from wood to plastic

The son Godtfred was his father's successor. Godtfred joins the company and starts looking for even better materials. In 1949, Godtfred's building blocks were made in plastic for the first time. Plastic was not well known at that time. With plastic as a raw material, Lego's popularity increased enormously. The stone was improved in 1958. The block is mainly made sturdier and harder.

Versatile

There are 102,981,500 ways to combine six Lego blocks with eight buttons of the same color. Ole Kirk Christiansen may just experience the breakthrough; he died in 1958. A year earlier, in 1957, his son Godtfred Kirk Christiansen had taken over the business from him. The great success story starts from that moment. But not everything goes smoothly! Every success story has its dark periods. In 1960, a devastating fire destroyed the Lego factory. That is why Godtfred decides to focus entirely on the production of plastic Lego bricks. And the success is endless, it seems. All age groups are considered. In 1995, the 75-year-old designer of the plastic Lego bricks, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, died. Since 1979, Kjeld Lirk Christiansen has taken over the management of the global company. It's strange because the correct spelling = Kjeld Lirk Kristiansen. Yes, with a K. Definitely a mistake in the paperwork. Lego's objective is to develop creativity per age category, develop imagination, support the development of the playing child. Quality The quality of the product is therefore extremely high. Lego has different types per age category

LEGO Land Parks

Over the years, three Legoland family parks have even opened their doors. A fourth, in southern Germany, opened in 2002. There are Legoland parks in: England: Windsor USA: California Germany and... Denmark

LEGO is popular

In recent years, the popularity of the now world-famous Lego brick has decreased. Computer games were on the rise. The Lego makers did not stop there and switched to making computer techniques. The latest products, the Lego mindstorms, are the new craze. Children can design their own robotic figures and let them “think, see and feel” via the computer. This way, Lego remains a favorite for many children.
