LEGO® Fortnite® guide for parents

LEGO® Fortnite® is a game that inspires players' endless creativity in a familiar, safe environment .

LEGO Fortnite adds the LEGO Group's famous minifigures as outfits, bricks and LEGO-style elements to Fortnite from developer Epic Games. You can even download and play LEGO Fortnite via the existing Fortnite launcher. Just select the LEGO Fortnite tile from the Discover menu.

But LEGO Fortnite is not a Battle Royale with minifigures. It's a brand new experience that combines the best of both worlds, so anyone who has already downloaded Fortnite can play LEGO Fortnite for free*; alone or (even better) with friends.

What is LEGO® Fortnite®?

Unlike the Fortnite you may know, LEGO Fortnite's focus is on long-term survival, building and collaborating with friends online. The proportions of those ingredients are up to the players and that is why LEGO Fortnite has two types of worlds, each suitable for a different approach.

Each massive LEGO Fortnite world is procedurally generated and therefore unique to each player. They are full of mysteries to discover, spread across areas such as the rocky coastlines of the Boulder Coast and the cool shade of Lush Forests.

As players explore the wild worlds they create, they'll discover friendly residents (many characters and creatures even come from Fortnite) as well as animals like cows and sheep made from LEGO bricks and elements. Players can also discover less friendly enemies, such as wild wolves, spiders or even pirates!

Some players will prefer to focus on adventure and want to collect elements to craft the best weapons and work together to explore dark and mysterious caves full of loot and enemies and engage in epic boss battles. Other players can focus on founding, building, expanding and improving villages, inviting visiting villagers to move in, assigning them jobs and working together to tame their wild world. Still other players may specialize in building because they love building their own LEGO creations and populating the world with pre-made creations that click together seamlessly. The possibilities are as endless as the creativity and imagination of each player.

That's why LEGO Fortnite is the best of both worlds. It combines the familiar terrain of Fortnite and the LEGO Group's beloved bricks and elements to create a huge creative playground for players to play in the way that makes them happy.

What is a survival world?

In a survival world, players become the heroes: they collect resources, build structures, craft tools and weapons, fight enemies and explore a vast open world.

The built-in challenge of a survival world is that players must gather and craft what they need to survive. Players collect wood from trees and turn it into campfires, torches, axes and shovels to collect more resources, as well as swords and shields to defend themselves.

The more they build, the more they learn. The more they learn, the more blueprints they unlock to build bigger and better things.

What is a sandbox world?

In a sandbox world, it's as if each player has an endless supply of LEGO bricks and elements. Players don't have to worry about wild wolves guarding the forest where they collect wood, but can simply build a log cabin, without the need for gathering or fighting.

From the moment players first enter the sandbox world, it's all about creating and expressing themselves, without fighting enemies or gathering supplies. They can even take to the air, like a superhero, to explore the map.

LEGO Fortnite safety

LEGO Fortnite allows eight players to dive into one world at the same time, and having a community is the best way to play the game. Players work together to build, harvest, collect and overcome challenges. Every player is stronger and better with friends.

In Fortnite it has each island has an age rating, and you can determine which islands your child can visit based on that rating. Fortnite has extensive in-game parental controls that allow adults to manage their child's experience. Any platform the game is available on, for example PlayStation®, Xbox, Nintendo Switch™ and Windows – also offers its own parental controls.

With the parental supervision from Epic Games, you can manage access to social features (like voice chat), require a parental control PIN for purchases, and set up additional controls. You can access it online via the Epic's account portal, but also in-game via the Parental Controls menu in Fortnite. Here's how to access that menu in the game:

  1. Fire up Fortnite
  2. Open the main menu (which looks like three horizontal lines) and select the gear icon.
  3. Select Parental Controls from the menu that loads.

Epic's parental controls require you to set a six-digit PIN via the Epic account portal or the Parental Controls menu in Fortnite. The PIN code ensures that only you can make changes to the settings.

From the account portal, parents and guardians can customize their parental controls to create an age-appropriate experience for each family member. Key features of parental controls include:

  • Voice and text chat permissions: You can manage who your child can talk to through Epic's voice and text chat. You can select options like 'Friends Only', which allows your child to only talk to other players on their Epic friends list and Platform friends list, or you can disable chat completely.
  • Purchase settings: You can choose to require your parental control PIN to be entered before making real money purchases with Epic Checkout.
  • To require your PIN for friend requests: You have the option to require your PIN to be entered before your child can send or accept Epic friend requests.

Note: If your child plays on a console, you may also need to set parental controls for purchases, communication restrictions, and more in that environment. For example, if you turn off voice chat in Fortnite, your child may still be able to access voice chat through the chat system built into the console.

The community rules from Epic contain clear guidelines for how all players should behave within the environment, and with the voice reporting function Fortnite allows anyone to submit audio evidence so that Epic can take action against other players who use voice chat to bully, harass, or engage in other inappropriate behavior. For players under 18, the feature is automatically enabled in voice chats. You can Also view the voice reporting settings in-game via Fortnite's audio menu.

To work

Your child needs an Epic Games account to play LEGO Fortnite. If, when creating an Epic account, a player indicates that they are under the age of 13 or the age of digital consent of the player's country (whichever is higher), the account is a Cabin account. A Cabined account is an Epic account designed to create a safe and inclusive space for younger players. Players with a Cabined account can still play LEGO Fortnite, but will not have access to certain features, such as voice chat, until their parent or guardian gives permission.

If your child already plays Fortnite, then they already have what they need to play LEGO Fortnite. When you open Fortnite, you can go to LEGO Fortnite from there.

You can also register your child with an existing account with LEGO, Epic Games, Nintendo®, PlayStation or Xbox. If your child doesn't have one of these accounts, we recommend that you a LEGO account and link it to create your Epic Games account. You can also link an existing LEGO account to an existing Epic Games account. In any case, linking your Epic and LEGO accounts will give you LEGO Insiders or LEGO Insiders Club (for younger players) and bonuses like the Explorer Emilie gear, including the LEGO style for your child's linked accounts.

You can also Log into an account via the official Epic Games site to let Epic know who your child is in the many places they can play LEGO Fortnite, such as consoles and mobile devices.

Once you've set up and linked the account, adding friends is a simple process.

  1. Launch Fortnite and log into your child's account.
  2. Select your child's round avatar icon in the top right corner of the screen.
  3. Select the plus button icon from the menu that appears to go to the Add Friends menu.
  4. In the box provided, enter the Epic account names or email addresses of your child's friends.

LEGO Fortnite has a feature called crossplay, which allows people to join a game of the game no matter what platform they are on, including PlayStation, Mac, PC, Nintendo Switch™ or Xbox. Crossplay is enabled by default, so it doesn't matter what hardware your child and their friends have. They can all play together.

LEGO Fortnite is a playground for players of all ages, whether they go on daring adventures or spend their time building castles in the air. It's all about encouraging imagination and creativity. Playing together is the ultimate social experience in LEGO Fortnite.

Whether you're alone or with friends, you can play LEGO Fortnite for free*. The journey has only just begun and updates will be released from early 2024 with new world building, gameplay options and more LEGO styles.

*Optional in-game purchases available.
