The history of LEGO Disney

In 1923, two brothers founded a new animation studio that would eventually become one of the most beloved companies in the world. Today we know it as Walt Disney Animation Studios and it continues to bring magical moments to millions of people around the world.

The Walt Disney Company has been around for more than a century and to celebrate its centenary, we look back with you on our collaboration with Disney.

1999 – The start of a long-term collaboration

One of several Winnie the Pooh sets released in 1999
It all started in 1999 in the Hundred Acre Wood with a certain always-hungry bear. With no more than eight stones the Winnie the Pooh Pooh's House set had relatively humble beginnings, but this simple set was the start of a collaboration that would last for many years. Of course, it wouldn't stop at this one trip to Pooh's house. In 2021 we released a more detailed set with LEGO Ideas.

2000 – Meet Disney's iconic mouse couple

Minnie's birthday party, 2000

A year later, two of the world's most famous animated characters were released in LEGO bricks for the first time. Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse appeared in 2000 in the LEGO Juniors sets Mickey's Fire Engine and Minnie's Birthday Party.

Mickey Mouse may be the most famous Disney character, but he was not the first. That honor went to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a character featured in one of our 2023 LEGO BrickHeadz™ anniversary sets.

After our race on Route 66, we set sail for the Caribbean together with Jack Sparrow, Captain Barbossa, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann. The first film in this famous series premiered in 2003 and introduced us to the most legendary pirate we have ever seen.

We have released several sets based on the Pirates of the Caribbean films, including the very popular set The Black Pearl. Parlay!

2012 – The very first Disney Princess set

Pretty much since its inception, Disney has been creating enchanting female heroines. It all started in 1937 with Snow White and in 1950 the world was introduced to Cinderella. Both paved the way for future Disney princesses.

In 2012 we released the first LEGO DUPLO | with a Cinderella set Disney Princess ™ line aimed at toddlers. Since then, we have also made Disney Princess sets for older children with Mulan, Ariel, Tiana, Rapunzel and many more.

2014 – Disney and Pixar are introduced to LEGO Ideas

When we launched LEGO Ideas, our platform where fans can propose ideas themselves, it didn't take long before our first Disney set appeared there too. The LEGO Ideas WALL•E set was designed by Angus MacLane, an animator who worked on the film at the time. It wasn't the last time WALL•E would see the light of day: this year he appears together with EVE in a new LEGO BrickHeadz set.

One of Disney and Pixar's most moving stories is that of Carl Fredricksen from the film ' Up '.
