They say you shouldn't play with your food, but it's okay if the "food" is made of plastic and is actually a LEGO minifigure. As LEGO minifigures have become more complex, they've donned all kinds of weird and wonderful outfits. This is most common in the long-running LEGO Minifigures line and started in 2015 with Series 13 and the Hot Dog Man. Since then, more than one food item has inspired other similar costumed food mascots.
Hot Diggity Dog
The Hot Dog Man appeared in LEGO Minifigures Series 13 and started the "make a LEGO figure in the shape of food" trend. The hot dog bun outfit has been used in other sets, including those based on the LEGO NINJAGO Movie and even in a Friends set, where it was used by this mini-doll figure.
Let's Go Bananas
In 2016, the Banana Man appeared in series 16 of the LEGO Minifigures. This LEGO figure in a banana suit also inspired a larger Keychain Light and bag tag. The same element was reused in 2019 for the Party Banana Juice Bar GWP (gift with purchase) set. Both figures can be seen below.
He's A-Maize-ing
In 2017, Series 17 of LEGO Minifigures debuted another new food suit, this time inspired by a corncob. The Corn Cob Guy transformed sweet corn into a wearable costume. For the real fans it is nice to know that LEGO City Mayor Solomon Fleck wore this corn cob suit.
Dude, don't be so melon dramatic
After the success of The LEGO Movie, the second part was even crazier and featured many colorful characters. Many of them appeared in The LEGO Movie 2 Minifigure series released alongside the film in 2019. One such character was the Watermelon Dude / Watermelon Man. He wore an interesting new costume piece, which has a strong connection to other food minifigures.
Pizza, Pizza... ooowww Pizza
Now it turns out that the shape of the slice of watermelon can also serve as a tasty slice of pizza. Series 19 of the LEGO Minifigures included the same part used for the Watermelon Dude / Watermelon minifigure for this Pizza Costume Guy. While other minifigures seem to enjoy wearing the food costume, the Pizza Man seems to be forced to wear it.
Give "Peas" a chance
When the LEGO minifigure line reached its 20th series in 2020, the Pea Girl / Pea Pod costume girl was introduced. Strangely enough, despite her love of peas, she also had an apple. Maybe it's a Danish thing. As with other food-based Minifigures, the Pea Girl / Pea Pod Costume Girl also became a keychain.
Too Hot!!!!
With the 22nd series of LEGO Minifigures, the number of Food Mascots increased with the Hot Pepper Fan / Chili Costume Fan. As you'll see, the 'boy/many' and 'Girl/womanl' tags were removed in 2022 in favor of the 'fan' moniker. The Chili Costume Fan was also one of the first food mascots to allow the character to take off the costume and then put on a hairpiece.
What do you cake for?
It's not just the LEGO Minifigures series that gave us our food Minifigure. The recently released Birthday Build A Minifigure Pack found in LEGO Stores includes a Cake suit fan. This again uses the triangular costumes used for both the Watermelon and Pizza Food fans. This time it is decorated like a delicious piece of cake. Under the cake costume, the minifigure has a great decoration. So that's what you were looking at!
For when you "ice" a lot
It's not often that food-based characters are introduced outside of the LEGO Minifigures line. But in 2022, LEGO City debuted the Ice Cream suit, which comes in three different colors in two different LEGO City sets. The blue and pink ice cream suits are worn by the ice cream crooks in the Ice Cream Truck Police Chase set. With a green variant found in the Beach Lifeguard Station set and worn by an ice cream vendor.
