Dungeons & Dragons (D&D, DnD) is a fantasy role-playing game. It was developed in the 1970s by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. The first official version was published in 1974 by the publishing house Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. (TSR). D&D is widely recognized as the beginning of modern role-playing games. [1][2]

When it was released, the game quickly became popular among American students. In the 1980s, D&D attracted particular attention from the media: it was wrongly associated with Satanism and suicide. It was also considered partly responsible for excessive violent crimes committed by young people (such as video games and violent films at the beginning of the 21st century).[3][4] But this made the game even more popular. It quickly became an international success. At the beginning of the 21st century, it is estimated that approximately 20 million people worldwide play D&D.[2]

In the 1990s, D&D almost disappeared when TSR, the company founded by Gary Gygax to run the game, went bankrupt. Wizards of the Coast, a competitor best known for Magic: The Gathering, then (1997) bought all the rights and published a completely new edition from 2000.
